Grain & Gauge

Drawings and short notes about wood, proportion and making room for a better idea.

Reading the end grain

A small workshop notebook

A board tells a different story at each end. Along its length we see flowing lines; across it we see the rings that those lines belong to. Looking at both before making a cut can suggest how to arrange neighbouring pieces.

The space between slats

A study in rhythm

A row of narrow boards is also a row of narrow spaces. Their rhythm changes when the gap is almost as wide as the wood. In a sketch, alternating solid marks and blank paper makes that change easy to see.

Keeping a useful sketchbook

Small notes, revisited

A workshop notebook does not need to be beautiful. It needs to preserve the small decision that would otherwise be made twice: the order of an assembly, a colour pairing or a dimension worth checking again.
